Beneficiaries
Children First, with assistance of USAID Uplifting Adolescents Project,
has been providing an holistic programme focusing on remedial education,
formal school placement, life skill, environmental education, counseling,
child rights and skill training. This special educational programme has
been catering to the need of 250 potential/street and working (high risk)
children aged 10-14, since October 1997.
Poverty is the fundamental reason for marginalization of urban and
rural youths in Jamaica. This manifested itself in low school
attendance, increased encounters with the law, decreased ability to
access skill training, and decreased ability to make choices that
impact family health in a positive manner.
|
The Children First programme family profile tells volumes about
the hardships of the families that Children First reaches out
to support.
|
Families targeted by Children First are often:
- Living in households where every one including children work
or hustle to help the others to survive.
- Living in cramped conditions without access to running water
or electricity.
- Household led by mother primarily, unskilled with seasonal
employment, weak family structure and ties amongst family
members.

For these street children, working
children and at risk children
it's a chance to become worthwhile contributing members of
society.
