What we are All About
The Youth Theatre Workshop
is an intensive after-school program that
seeks to use the performing arts as a means of disseminating
information about and providing a safe atmosphere for discussing
issues of adolescent reproductive health. The goals are to achieve
higher levels of critical and analytical thinking skills as well as
more substantial literacy skills thereby lessening the rates for drug a
ddiction, early pregnancy, STD transmission, promiscuity, poor communication
skills, and low self-esteem/self-confidence among Deaf youth, ages 10 to 21.
Why we Designed the Project
In the Deaf community, low levels of critical and analytical
thinking skills as well as problem-solving skills, stemming from
low educational achievement and social prejudices, result in inadequate
socio-economic status and achievement.
Such problems are manifested in the following ways:
- Early and irresponsible sexual activity
- Illiteracy and innumeracy
- Poor sense of self
- Minimal labor options
The above problems are not unique to the Deaf community,
but it is the means of addressing these issues in the Deaf
community that is a struggle.
As the performing arts are of a visual and participatory nature,
we believe they are an excellent means of conveying critical
information to Deaf youth regarding sexuality and related
adolescent reproductive health issues.
