General Information
The Mel Nathan Institute is a human and community development
agency of the United Church in Jamaica and the Cayman Islands.
The Institute began operating in Hannah Town, Kingston, in 1978.
This location at St. John's United Church remains the cradle of
the Institute. The Institute is governed by two boards, appointed
by the synod of the United Church. The Board of Trustees is responsible
for the financial policy and legal aspects of the Institute's operation.
The Board of Directors is an operational board and oversees the day to
day operations of the Institute.
The Mel Nathan Institute seeks to create a climate for empowering
people, through a variety of animation strategies. Community leaders
are encouraged and enabled to take a hold of their lives so that they,
in turn, can influence others to become agents of change and development.
Over the years the Institute has streamlined its range of programmes and
while it now operates island-wide, it has maintained its priority interest
in inner city communities. In January 1992 the Institute opened an
Administrative and Business Centre. The Centre provides an organisms
location for the Institute's varied operational areas and services.
The operational arms of the Institute are as follows:
- General Administration
- Hannah Town Operation
- Economic Enterprises Services
- Community Consulting Services
