Programme Performance
Parents have commented on the improvements they have seen in the
literacy skills and the positive changes in the behavioral pattern
of their children.
Staff training has been conducted in Springburn House as well as
at the different locations. This is in keeping with our attempt to have
the UAP program effectively delivered in all locations. Training
topics include:
- Teaching the at Risk Adolescent
- Remedial Education
- Sports and Community Development
- Parenting Skills
- Stress Management
- Communication Skills
- Behavior and Discipline
- Methodology for Personal & Family Development
The sports program continues to be of interest for all adolescents.
Football is still number one among the boys. Other sporting activities
include volleyball and netball.
Educational trips during the year also help to enhance the program.
For some of the participants these are the only occasions when they
get an opportunity to leave their communities. It is on occasions like
these that we use the opportunity to get all the locations together so
that the participants can interact with each other.
Community Networking
Networking of other available resources are key to the program. Mel
Nathan has been able to work with the local police, businesses and the
health personnel in the community who give talks to participants.
The mobilization strategies have helped in the recruitment of adolescents.
These include flyers, posters and home visits. Schools, churches, and
social agencies are visited and notified about registration. Staff members
often make door to door visits in the communities.
