CHILDREN FIRST
One of the few organizations in Jamaica specializing in street/working children in
Spanish Town, one of the oldest cities in the Western Hemisphere. They maintains
close linkages with community organizations including the police, school principals,
church and government leaders.
JAMAICA ASSOCIATION FOR THE DEAF
Founded in 1938, it is one of the oldest non-profit organizations of its
kind in the Caribbean. Under the UAP, the Association is teaching the
performing arts to more than 200 deaf students as a means of expression
and getting messages across to hearing-impaired youth.
JAMAICA RED CROSS
The UAP program is currently delivered at four Red Cross centers to
275 out-of-school adolescents, and another 1,038 in-school youth. Its
goal is to empower youth through the provision of literacy, numeracy,
and marketable skills.
MEL NATHAN INSTITUE FOR SOCIAL RESEARCH
The mission of this organization is to promote the advancement of
extremely deprived communities in both urban and rural areas, to
provide educational opportunities, including preparatory and vocational
facilities, and to facilitate human development as an integral part of
community development.
RURAL FAMILY SUPPORT ORGANIZATION
This program caters to teen-age mothers by improving their self-esteem
and making them capable of helping themselves and their babies to
become a productive Jamaican family unit.
SAM SHARPE TEACHERS COLLEGE
Although a Teachers College, this institution has reached out to
four deprived communities with a comprehensive program in all four
technical components of the UAP. They are reaching over 546 out-of-school
adolescents.
ST. PATRICK'S FOUNDATION
Located in the inner-city communities of Olympic Gardens,
Tower Hill, Seaview Gardens, Riverton and Calaloo Mews, this organization
helps youth to transcend the constraints of their socio-economic environment
in order to become responsible citizens.
WESTERN SOCIETY FOR THE UPLIFTMENT OF CHILDREN
A product of Save the Children/UK, this NGO has enjoyed great success in
returning street and high-risk children to school and keeping them there.
It is closely linked to other institutions traditionally involved in
supporting children, including the Family Courts, the local police,
and the formal schools.
WOMEN'S CENTRE OF JAMAICA FOUNDATION
Started in 1978 as the Program for Adolescent Mothers in Kingston,
the organization has grown to national prominence with centers in seven
Parishes, and 14 outreach stations nation-wide. It assists pregnant girls
under age 16 and has established an outstanding record of returning them
to the formal school system.
YMCA, KINGSTON
This organization has established and outstanding record of helping more
than 300 street/working children and out-of-school youth with programs in
literacy, numeracy, skills training and sports activities.
YOUTH OPPORTUNITIES UNLIMITED
A "one of a kind" organization in Jamaica specializing in a distinguished
Mentor program for high school students using positive role models to
provide emotional support in order to build self confidence and self esteem.
YWCA, NATIONAL COUNCIL
This program assists more than 650 young females, helping to improve
their academic skills. It operates Early School-Leavers Institutes,
a Basic School, After-School Care and Literacy, and Continuing Education
evening classes in addition to its Y-Teen clubs in over 24 schools.
